The Devils in the Details will be a weekly post, looking back on the stats from your New Jersey Devils in their past week of play. Games between Sunday and Saturday from every week will be highlighted, with stats like Goals, Assists, PIM, Shots, etc. being the main focus. This week, we take a look at the Devils between March 3 and March 9, a week many Devils fans would probably like to forget. The Devils played four games against the Maple Leafs, Lightning, Sabres, and Hurricanes and went 1-3-0. If it wasn’t for a shootout win over the Sabres on Thursday night, the Devils would have had their worst week in the season, and could be in the middle of a 8-game losing streak.

Patrik Elias led the team in goals (3) scoring a goal in each of his last three games, including the game-tying goal with 1:06 left on Thursday. Ryan Carter led the team in assists (3), fueled by his two assists on Marek Zidlicky’s two goals against the Maple Leafs. Ilya Kovalchuk broke a goalless streak on Saturday night, scoring two goals against the Hurricanes in a 6-3 loss, and led the team in shots for the week (17). David Clarkson led the team in PIM (7) after a fight in Tuesday’s 5-2 loss to the Lightning. Johan Hedberg continued to struggle, finishing the week with a .818 save percentage and needed to be replaced by Kinkaid on Tuesday, and by Frazee on Saturday. Kinkaid let up one goal against the Lightning, while having a highlight-reel save on a Stamkos breakaway, and Frazee stopped all three shots he faced.

Time on Ice Stats

Once again, Ilya Kovalchuk led the team on Time on Ice, racking up over 96 minutes in the four games. Andy Greene led the defense for TOI, registering over 94 minutes. Greene and Zidlicky were the only two defensemen to play in all four games this week.

So…now’s the time for this week’s Shocking Stat. You might want to sit down for this one. You sitting down? I’m serious. Alright here it is: At a +2, Krystofer Barch led the team in +/- this week. You weren’t sitting down were you? I tried to warn you…Barch was on the ice for both of Zidlicky’s goals against the Maple Leafs, and wasn’t on the ice for any other goals against.

Let me know what you guys think about the new post, The Devils in the Details!
